 saudijobs@yahoo.com Basic Facility Information: Location: 35km (22m) north of Riyadh with a land area of 225 square kilometers Number of terminals: 4 Transfer between terminals: The Terminals are all housed within the same building; moving walkways assist transfers between Terminals. Information and help desks: Each Terminal has an operations office which provides passenger information: further information is provided via flight information display systems and public announcements. Airport facilities: Two 24 hour banks operate in Terminal 2 and there are ATMs in Terminals 2 and 3. There is an airport hospital and first aid centres open 24 hours, and a post office in Terminal 2. There are caf&#eacute;s throughout and a 24 hour restaurant in Terminal 3 but no bars (alcohol is illegal). Shops are available throughout. Disabled facilities: Facilities for disabled people include accessible toilets and telephones. Car rental: Ten rental companies including Avis, Budget and Hertz operate at the airport. Note that women are not allowed to drive on public roads in Saudi Arabia, nor to be a passenger in a car with a man who is not an immediate family member. Car parking: Car parking is available including disabled spaces. Driving directions: Major roads to the airport are King Fahd Road, Al-Takhassousi Road and the East Interstate Highway. Public transport and taxis: Limousines and authorized prepaid taxis marked with the airport logo are available 24 hours a day for the 30-minute drive to the city centre. Women may take taxis. |
 The airport occupies an area of about 225 square kilometers, bordered to the north by Wadi Mekhar & to the south by Wadi Abal Jernan. This area houses all the airport main facilities and installations including the terminals, mosque, the control tower and two parallel runways each 4200 meters long. Functional Facilities  In addition to the airport support buildings, there are air operations building, facility buildings, General Aviation and Special Flight Service Complex. The airport also includes taxiways, an airfield, road system and a housing complex which accommodates three thousand persons.  The passengers complex includes two international and two domestic terminals connected with three link buildings. Each terminal is of triangular shape with a triangular base. The floor area is approximately 47,500 square meters.The roof consists of 72 triangular pieces and 24 meters long arches on each side. Each link building is 168 meters long and an approximate  area of 25,000 square meters. The buildings contain moving walkways, restaurants, cafeterias, offices for the airlines and government agencies and commercial shops.All these terminals are connected to each other by means of three linking buildings, These buildings are 168 meters long. Each terminal is triangularly shaped, it has a triangular base of 47,500 sq meters area. The complex includes a modern VIPs terminal plus restaurants, cafeterias, airlines offices, government departments, hotels and rent-a-car companies counters, banks, first aid clinics and commercial shops. There is a three level building of cast in-place concrete used as car parking for the terminals and mosque which accommodates about 800 cars in addition to 3,600 cars on top of the roof.  The Royal Pavilion, located in the south end of the airport has a triangular foundation and comprises 33 triangular shaped panels each rib is 22 meters long and the total area is approximately 28,500 square meters. The ceremonial mall 12.5 meters wide and 390 meters long is located between the Royal Pavilion and the mosque. Heads of state and other high-ranking VIP visitors to the Kingdom are greeted in the Royal Pavilion which reflects the culture of Islam with grand architectural spaces, lush garden areas and cooling fountains. The design and geometry of the building are similar to those of the other terminals architecturally and in the aesthetic respect. The support buildings include:
Central Plant provides all chilled and high temperature water to condition the Airport’s central core of buildings. The Plant operates 4 high temperature water boilers in parallel, each generating 45 million BTUs per hour and 4 centrifugal refrigeration units with a cooling capacity of 5000 tons each, using refrigeration freon 22 to heat and cool these buildings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as required throughout the year. The Plant provides chilled water at 4 degrees centigrade to the terminals, terminal links, mosque, control tower, support buildings and other adjacent facilities. The chilled water returns to the unit at a temperature of approximately 14 degrees centigrade after supplying all buildings in the chilled water distribution system. The high temperature water boilers and standby diesel generators uses no. 2 Diesel oil pumped directly from the dedicated tanks in the Fuel Farm (UF1) to the underground storage tanks at Central Plant. Airfield facilities: include two runways, each 4200 meters long by 60 meters wide; three parallel taxiways, each about 1800 meters in length, allow aircraft to move from one side of the airfield to the other over the spine roadway system. There are 29 other smaller taxiways. There are four aprons serving the airport: Passenger Terminal apron with an area of 430,000 square meters Cargo apron – 64,000 square meters Royal Terminal apron 178,000 square meters General Aviation apron 96 square meters. Tunnel system: seven by four meters and 7 kilometers long, houses lines & power communication and control cables from the Central Plant to the passenger terminals. Another tunnel to the support facilities is 2900 meters long. Air Traffic Control Tower
At 81 meters high, the control tower is one of the highest in the world! Centrally located in the passenger  terminal complex, between the Royal Pavilion and the mosque is the air traffic control tower. There are 19 separate floor levels in the tower, including the operations area at the base of the tower and a total of 1,230 square meters of floor space. Six of the 19 floors are considered main floors. These include the operational level at the base of the tower, two equipment floors, an observation floor, a service floor and the cab floor at the top of the tower from which the air traffic controllers overlook the entire airport.The operations floor houses the radar control center for the airport as well as conference rooms, offices and a training area.The two equipment level contain mechanical and electrical equipment and cables, and the service floor contains a kitchen, lounge and lavatories for personnel on duty in the cab. The cab itself contains controller operating positions and electronic and communications equipment. The tower is supplied with two sources of standby power should the regular source of power be interrupted. Once source is the standby power supply at the central power plant – three diesel engine generators. In addition, a 300 kilowatt diesel engine located in the tower itself can provide a secondary source of emergency power. The tower has been outfitted with the most advanced electronic radar systems and data processing equipment. A Busy Place! From its inauguration, it had the capacity to handle 7.5 million passengers a year. By 2000 (1420/21 AH),the capacity doubled. Much like a self contained city the airport maintains it’s own water treatment and waste treatment plant, power generation and utility needs. The extensive tele-communications system and various specialized equipment from baggage ramps to escalators require a large work force to keep everything working at optimum levels.

The contract does NOT include the aviation side of operations. We are looking for superintendent and chief engineers and experienced supervisors to oversee the maintenance of all the facilities including the HVAC, electrical power generation, water and waste treatment, maintain specialized equipment such as baggage ramps, FIDS, metal detectors, elevators etc., instrumentation and control specialist and telecommunications specialist to maintain the extensive telephone & communications system within this huge facility.Basic Employment Terms
Architectural Details Art Work Some of the finest artwork in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are on view at KKIA. Paintings, tapestries, sculptures, oriental carpets and mosaics are among the many on display in the terminals and other public buildings,  including the mosque. Many Saudi artists along with the international well-known artists contributed to the process.An Oasis of Landscaping In addition to being an architectural masterpiece, KKIA. with its more than 50 hectares of landscaping greenery is the Kingdom’s green oasis. Over 225,000 trees, vines, shrubs and ground cover plants were used to landscape the airport site and the interior courtyards. Amazingly, almost all of these plants came from the airport’s own nursery. The landscaping enhances the site and provides human comfort and visual interest in the environment.Each major facility has landscape elements which are appropriate to it’s physical structure. Inside the airport terminals, the traveler is greeted with a display of water, flowers and trees designed for close-range viewing by pedestrians. Outside the terminals, the landscape design relies heavily on large trees appropriate for viewing from the air or from moving automobiles. Most of the water used for irrigation is treated effluent from the KKIA sewage treatment plant. An automatic underground water emitter system is used throughout the site in order to allow slow slippage through the root zone while minimizing evaporation. All of the plants selected for the site are tolerant of heat, wind and dry soil conditions. Wherever possible, plants with a history of successful growth in the Riyadh area or similar environments were selected. Further, the irrigation includes an injection feature whereby fertilizers and nutrients are added to the soil from time to time as the trees, shrubs and ground corner plants are being watered. Through the use of this sophisticated drip emitter system, every tree, shrub and vine on the airport with the exception of a few tub planters is watered by underground drip lines. The airport gardens and landscaped plots not only beautify the area but also help stabilize the soil, cut down on the harsh the effects of strong wind and provide a natural site screening and refreshing gateway to the Kingdom’s capital, Riyadh. The date palm, symbolic of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was selected to define the mosque area and the central portion of the terminal complex & the key public areas of the airport. Fir trees, native to the Middle East are used to line the approach road to the Royal Pavilion and the ceremonial mall. Citrus trees, which also have historic significance as a tree of ancient Middle East gardens, are used in groves flanking the ceremonial mall. The fan palm is also used along the airport approach roads and in the community facilities. Certainly, the most spectacular floral array is found in the passenger terminals where large interior gardens featuring flowing plants and fountains for the aesthetic focal point of each terminal. There are extensive flower cover in the geometric shapes that characterize Islamic art, the shapes are repeated in the fountains and water displays. Terraced groups of trees and low trailing vines combine to provide a stunning visual impact for the arriving passengers or for departing passengers, who can look down on the display from the upper level of each terminal. The Mosque
The KKIA Mosque, located in the center of the passenger complex,can accommodate 5,000 worshippers and the same number in the plaza outside. With a minaret, a plaza and ablution places covering an internal area of 5,800 square meters. The dome with a diameter of 33 meters and towers 40 meters above the arrivals level roadway, higher than most of the other structures in the passenger complex.  The design of KKIA Mosque is one of the most distinct landmarks in the airport by virtue of its Islamic architecture. The carved marble bonds, stained glass windows and skylights, intricate ceramic tile patterns, and carved wooden doors and size make it a showplace of traditional Islamic art forms. Located in the center of the passenger terminal, it the first sight visitors see as they leave the arrival area. A two-meter-high band of clerestory glass separates the dome from the mosque roof and gives the impression, from outside, that the dome is floating above the roof. Inside, shafts of sunlight filter through tinted glass and illuminate the interior with a soft amber and blue light that spread tranquility. To reach the mock plaza, a visitor walks up a wide ceremonial stairway in the direction of Makkah. The 46 steps are 60 meters wide at the bottom, tapering to 42 meters at the top. Escalators are also available to reach the plaza level, one at each side of the stairway. First time visitors to Riyadh will long remember the sight of the huge dome looming over them as they walk up the steps to the plaza area.  The dome and lower roof are clad with buff-colored triangular ceramic tiles, attached to steel beams. Inside, 1008 bronze panels are fitted into the dome, above a ring of decorative mosaic tiles inscribed with passages from the Koran. The dome is held up by a network of steel columns and trusses, braced by the lower roof.A fabulous chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. Ninety-six tinted glass light cones are fitted to a bronze hoop 13 meters in diameter to bathe the prayer area in soft light after darkness falls. In the northeast corner of the mosque plaza, a minaret rises 39 meters above the plaza level. A spiral stairway inside the minaret provides access to loudspeakers that broadcast the daily five times call prayers.There are 5030 square meters of floor space on the main floor of the mosque and another 765 square meters on the mezzanine floor. A Koranic library off of the main mosque floor has 50 square meters of user space and the same amount for storage space. The library, private offices and lavatories are located along the southeast on southwest walls. |
